Chicago web design built to turn visitors into customers
We measured 300 small business websites across Chicagoland before we wrote a word of this page. One in nine could not be opened at all. Here is what we found, and what we build instead.
Chicago web design is a crowded phrase, and every agency page under it says the same four things. So rather than say them, we went and measured the market. In September 2026 we drew 300 independent small businesses across Chicago and the suburbs at random and tested every one of their websites.
What 300 Chicago small business websites actually look like
- 1 in 9could not be used at all — the domain had lapsed, the certificate was broken, or the page never finished loading
- 1.4 smedian load on a mid-range phone, which is the slow end of what a visitor will wait through
- 55%had no tappable phone number, so calling means leaving the site and typing it out
- 57%had no form of any kind, anywhere on the site
- 80%had a serious or critical accessibility fault
The method, the sample frame and the raw figures are all published in the study itself. No business is named in it. We mention it here because it is the only claim on this page you can go and check line by line, and because it says something uncomfortable: the bar in this market is low, and clearing it is mostly a matter of somebody bothering.
What a weak website costs a Chicago business
Not abstractly. A site that takes four seconds on a phone loses a share of every visitor before they read anything. A missing tappable number turns a ready customer into a task. A site that looks like 2014 gets compared against a competitor that does not, and the comparison takes about two seconds.
The businesses in the study were not careless. Most had a site built once, years ago, by somebody who has since moved on, and nobody has opened it on a phone since. That is the normal condition of a small business website, and it is why the opportunity here is so ordinary and so large.
What we build instead
- Pages that open in well under a second on a mid-range phone, not just on office wifi
- A tappable phone number and an obvious next step on every page
- Layouts that work on a phone first, because that is where your visitors are
- Local search foundations: your Google Business Profile, your details consistent everywhere
- Accessibility taken seriously rather than claimed
- The whole thing yours, domain included, from the day it launches
The full detail of how the build runs is on the website design and development page.
What it costs, without a quote form
Chicago agencies mostly quote on request, which means the number depends on what you look like you can pay. Ours are published.
Every tier, what is in each, and what is deliberately not, is on the pricing page. If you want to sanity-check what anyone else quotes you, this guide breaks down where the money actually goes.
Chicagoland sites we have built
- The Slick List Directory — A listing site that loads quickly on a bad connection.
- bitcritiq Tech reviews — Leads with the verdict, then shows the working — built to be read, not scrolled past.
- Paanwalla Indian street food — Menu, online ordering and a phone number people actually call.
- The Recipes to Remember Food publishing — Recipes that stay readable on a phone in a kitchen.
Live sites, not mockups. Open them on your own phone and time them. The rest of the work is here.
The suburbs we cover
The studio is in Naperville, and most of our Chicagoland work is suburban rather than downtown. Each of these has its own page, written about that place rather than find-and-replaced from this one.
- NapervilleDuPage and Will counties
- AuroraKane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties

Industries we build for
The advice genuinely differs by trade. A restaurant and a law firm are not solving the same problem, and a page that pretends otherwise is not much use.
- Restaurants and CafésThe menu, the hours, the photographs.
- Dental and Medical PracticesInsurance answered before they ring.
- Contractors and Home ServicesEmergency calls and planned projects.
- Professional and B2B ServicesLead with the problem, not the firm.
- Law FirmsA real page per practice area.
- Salons and SpasYour own work, and booking in one tap.
What else we do
- Social media marketingLook established, stay visible, without it eating your week.
- Search engine optimisationBuild traffic and inbound leads that keep arriving.
- Local visibility & lead generationHelp nearby customers find you, trust you, and call you.
- Paid advertisingImmediate visibility, measured properly.
- Email & marketing automationTurn leads into customers, and customers into repeat buyers.

Chicago web design questions
Agencies here quote anywhere from about $2,500 to $15,000 for a small business site, and a freelancer will usually come in under that. We price it differently: $249 to build a five-page site and $399 a year to keep it running, or from $149 a month if you want the site and the marketing handled together. The full breakdown is on the pricing page, and there is no quote-on-request step.
Two to three weeks for a five-page site, from the day we have your content. The part that sets the pace is almost always copy and photographs rather than the build. Larger sites run longer and we say so before you commit, not after.
Neither, for new builds. We measured what a page builder does to a real site: the menu page of a local restaurant was a 4.36 MB HTML document, 94% of it duplicated CSS. We build ours a different way, and the result is the part worth checking: open any site on our work page from your own phone and time it. If you already have WordPress and want it kept rather than replaced, that is a different conversation and an honest one.
That is most of what we are selling. The median Chicago-area small business site in our study took 1.4 seconds to load on a mid-range phone, and one in nine could not be opened at all. Ours load in a fraction of that, and you can check any of the sites on our work page from your own phone right now.
Yes, and the local kind is usually what actually moves the needle for a business with an address. Your Google Business Profile, consistent details everywhere they appear, and a site that backs up what the profile claims. The monthly plans include it; a one-off build does not.
Most of our Chicagoland work is in the suburbs rather than the Loop. The studio is in Naperville, and we have written pages for the ten suburbs we genuinely cover, each with what is actually different about working there.
With the one-off build, the site is yours and the yearly fee keeps it hosted, backed up, monitored and secure. Changes after launch need a care plan. With a monthly plan, changes are part of it. Nothing is bundled quietly into a contract you cannot leave.
Yes, outright, from the day it launches, including the domain and the files. We have seen enough businesses held hostage by an agency that owned their domain to make this the first thing we say rather than the last.
